The Teachable Moment
The philosophy of St. Mary's Home includes a belief that early parenthood is a time of opportunity for personal growth and for positive life changes. With the right support, young people who become parents often learn to draw upon personal strengths they didn't realize they had, and to make new, healthier and more responsible choices. In this way, teen pregnancy and parenting can be a "teachable moment", an opportunity to turn lives around.
Many of the young people who come to St. Mary's Home, both to the Residence and the Young Parent Outreach Centre, have had troubled lives. Pregnancy is the reason they come but they often need help because of other serious issues, which may include mental health difficulties, histories of abuse, addictions, developmental delay or a history of family dysfunction related to violence.
Becoming pregnant and being responsible for another life, is often a natural motivator for change. Our programs and services are designed to support this natural motivation and foster positive life changes that bring wellbeing to both the parent and the child. Our philosophy is grounded in a belief that young people can be nurtured to build upon their personal resilience and internal strengths to change their lives for the better, and to move forward to build strong, nurturing and healthy families.
